An Associates Degree in Science typically takes around 2 years to complete, and provides you with a general basic knowledge that many employers look for under their educational requirements. For example, a job criteria requiring “some college” would usually be fulfilled by an Associates Degree. Many students continue their education from this point to obtain their Bachelors Degree, however; others choose to use this degree to start their careers.
An Example of Jobs that utilize an Associates in Science would be:
- Geological Petroleum Technicians
- Nuclear Technicians
- Industrial Engineering Technicians
A Bachelors of Arts or Science Degree is the next step higher than the Associates mentioned above. This typically takes 2 more years to complete (so a total of 4 years), and provides students with a higher educational background. With this degree, you might be more likely to find more job availability with higher pay. Many students start their career after obtaining this degree, but some will continue on to get a graduate degree.
Examples of Jobs that require Bachelor’s Degrees are:
A graduate degree typically provides students with a higher skill set in a particular area. These degrees are highly specialized and require more research components than the lower degrees mentioned above. After receiving a Bachelors degree, some students choose to continue on and get their masters (typically another 2-3 years) and may or may not continue to get their Doctorate/PH.D (which can take another 4-5 years). These degrees provide students with opportunities in specific areas that require an immense amount of education. Many college professors or teachers have one or both of these types of degrees, but there are many other types of opportunities for students with a graduate degree such as:
- Biochemists and Biophysicists
- Environmental Scientists and Specialists
- Electronics Engineer
