The world of Mathematics is merging with computers and science – providing more opportunities for math majors today than ever before. This provides opportunities in a whole new area of careers including, actuarial science, operations research, biomathematics, teaching, cryptography, finance and more… Here is more about our programs:
Developmental Math
These courses serve as a refresher for students who need to work on certain concepts in Math prior to entering College level Math. These courses are offered frequently with availability to take the courses online, over the weekend, summer, etc. Professors of these courses provide excellent support for their students, and students also have many resources available to them for additional assistance, such as the Math Lab or Supplemental Instruction.
Intro Level College Math
This includes courses such as College Algebra, Precalculus, Plane Trig, Intro to Statistics and more. All students seeking an associates degree must take at least one college level math, and most four year institutions require at least one math course if not more. These classes also have a lot of flexibility whether a student wishes to take them online or in a traditional in person setting. These students also have the same support structures for tutoring or additional assistance as the developmental courses.
Intermediate College Courses
These courses are required for almost any student pursuing a Bachelors degree in Mathmatics, as well as most students who wish to get a bachelor’s in a science field. While it is important to look at the college or university you wish to transfer to, most schools require both Calculus I and Calculus II. El Centro students may benefit by taking both of these courses early in their college career so that they are prepared for their higher level courses immediately upon transfer. We also offer: Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathmatics, and Calculus III. (Also, if you are enrolled in Calculus, you become elgible to become an Supplemental Instruction leader, which could provide some additional financial assistance).
Engineering Prerequisites
While four year schools vary, most if not all schools require a solid base in Mathematics prior to completing an Engineering degree. El Centro offers many of the prerequisite courses for students interested in a degree in Engineering. Many of these courses are not limited to Math, however; many require a strong Mathematical application. These courses include: Calculus I & II, Differential Equations, Chemistry and Physics
